Marketing Lessons From My Family Christmas Time!

Lessons From Family Christmas

Hopefully you enjoyed time away from work celebrating your holiday of choice. It was an incredible time for me as our family was able to get together.

This week, the precious time known as the in-between gives us a chance to reflect on the things we enjoy and places that we can improve in the upcoming year.

I'm keeping the topics and stories light this week, but the principles shared can have a huge impact for you.

So gather round and find some humor and marketing in lessons from my family Christmas time.

What Christmas Punch and Dip Teach About Marketing

A Christmas Story

What is your favorite Christmas Movie? My family has three that we watch every year no matter what. Can you guess them? Email me what you think they are!

One of my three favorites is 1983's pop-culture hit "A Christmas Story". It was definitely not a blockbuster hit when it was released back then. It's moderately successful box office run was a gross of just over $19 million. Forty years ago that was moderate success. Times were simpler when I was ten years old.

The popularity of this quintessential look at Ralphie Parker as he approached Christmas really grew as the movie moved into syndication. Cable TV became a thing through the 1980s, and the movie was picked up and played on rotation for 24 hours on Christmas Eve by WTBS. The venerable station owned by Ted Turner couldn't play Atlanta Braves baseball in December, so this was their next best option. I've watched this movie at least once per year since the late 1980s and it largely because of TBS.

The movie's vignettes depicted life the complex lives of Ralphie and his family from those easy going days of the 1950s. There are many life lessons from the Parker family's Christmas including the ability to shoot your eye out with a Red Ryder BB Gun! And the Mythbusters confirmed in an episode that you can stick your tongue to a flagpole.

These venerable lessons lead me to this week's topic. As I watched the movie yet again for at least the 40th time, I am reminded of Ralphie's exploits and what it means to gather with my own family. While we didn't have a head chopped off a duck in a restaurant on Christmas Day, we do have some funny traditions and interactions. The episodes this week are what I have learned from them.

Hopefully you will see the simplistic value that can be gleaned from my family as you seek to create real connections with your marketing in 2025. Grab some coffee, and let's talk about the marketing lessons from my family Christmas time on The Porch this week.
